Five Ways to Get Ready for Spring

Living in California you might not think that the change of seasons is really a big deal. When many people think of California, they conjure up visions of swimming pools and sunshine, tee shirts and shorts, surfers and skate boards- all year long. I used to think this myself!  But living in the San Francisco Bay area, this is definitely not the case. Cool marine breezes, thick morning fog and chilly nights are the norm about this time of year. The mornings are always cool, and somewhere around 11:00 am the sunshine starts to peak through the clouds. Walking with my dog this weekend I noticed something I hadn’t seen in a while- hummingbirds, pretty colored blossoms, fragrant jasmine. It looked and smelled like spring. For me, the change in season is a great reminder; the months fly by, a new season is born, the days get longer. Even the air smells fresh, as if the start of something new is getting ready to begin. Lately I have been thinking about how to draw inspiration from the new season, and give myself the opportunity to bring some fresh perspective into my life. If you are facing a challenge, illness, cancer  or just the stress of daily life, sometimes the new season can bring new hope, possibility, or just better weather! Here are five things to help you usher in the new season.

  1. Spend a few minutes in your closet. Take out something you haven’t worn in a year- it will make someone very happy!
  2. Plant something in your garden, or pick up a potted plant at your supermarket. Tend to it daily, give it love and water. Watch it grow.
  3. Put on something colorful or bright. I have a closet full of black, I know how it is. Just try.
  4. Send a card or email to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. An old friend. Someone who is on your mind.
  5. Take 5 minutes to notice the beauty all around you. Bird singing? Snow banks shrinking? It doesn’t matter.

Hopefully spring has already sprung in your neck of the woods. If not- we can know with certainty, that at the perfect time, it will. What can you do to welcome the new season into your life? I’d love to hear about it! Welcome to the new season.
